The Meeting started at exactly 2:13am.
Not in the boardroom.
Not on Zoom.
But inside Tobi’s head.
At the head of the imaginary table sat Rent, adjusting his tie like an over-zealous HR manager.
“We need to talk,” Rent announced. “The landlord has started posting motivational quotes on WhatsApp. Dangerous sign.”
Across the table, School Fees cleared her throat dramatically. “I was actually here first.”
“Excuse me?” interrupted Fuel, barging in late and expensive as usual. “Has any of you seen pump prices lately?”
At the far end of the table sat Soft Life, wearing sunglasses indoors and scrolling through vacation pictures.
“Honestly, all of you stress too much,” Soft Life yawned. “What’s the point of surviving if we can’t enjoy ourselves small?”
“Enjoyment ke?” hissed Savings, clutching a notebook tightly. “That’s exactly how we suffered in January after your enjoyment of “detty December”!”
Beside him, Data Subscription raised a shaky hand.
“Can somebody remember I exist? You people stream one video and suddenly I disappear.”
Tobi turned in bed.
The meeting was getting louder.
Then the doors burst open again.
In walked Family Responsibility carrying three bags, one hospital bill, and an auntie’s voice note asking for “urgent 20k.” “Good evening everybody,” she sighed tiredly. “Hope you haven’t forgotten village people still exist.”
Chaos.
Everybody started shouting at once.
“Plan for the future!”
“Pay this bill first!”
“Live a little!”
“Invest!”
“Save!”
“Send transport money!”
“Buy that thing now before price increases again!”
Tobi sat up abruptly in bed. And I don’t blame his sudden loss of sleep.
Because honestly, this was exactly what life in Nigeria felt like sometimes: a giant meeting where every responsibility believed it was the most important.
In the midst of the swirl of the Bills, a calm small voice managed to carry through to Tobi from what seemed like a faraway corner:
“I know someone who always puts YOU First?”
Everybody turned. It was then Tobi noticed someone had been sitting quietly all along.
Not shouting.
Not panicking.
Just observing. With a wise smile of a person that knows things.
Tobi couldn’t tell what his name is but he immediately asked
“What do you mean?”.
The Wise smiled.
“I mean life already comes with enough pressure. Your bank should help simplify things, not complicate them.”
You could see The Bills looking at each other like we are talking bills this one is talking back. Scepticism. But even then, the mood in the room had started changing.
Savings saw himself as the potential chief winner. Afterall Banks help you save. They have more than enough tools to help you reach goals.
School Fees stopped panicking after learning of multiple ways school fees can be made with ease.
Business Dreams (quiet the whole time), finally spoke up after hearing about support for SMEs and entrepreneurs trying to grow something meaningful.
Even Soft Life sat upon learning the right combo for managing bills and still having a little left for the good life.
The voice continued calmly:
‘You First’ is not just a slogan by FirstBank…It is service! It is offering the gold standard of service delivery to real people, easing real pressures and supporting real ambitions.
Tobi thought about it – about how much easier life feels when transfers work quickly; when bills can be sorted from your phone; when you can access support without unnecessary stress; and when your bank actually understands the rhythm of your life.
At FirstBank, this is what we do. We put You First, creating financial services solutions to meet everyday needs:
For the salary earner trying to stay afloat before payday.
For the parent balancing school fees and household expenses.
For the entrepreneur chasing growth.
For the young Nigerian trying to build a future without losing their mind in the process.
Suddenly, the meeting no longer felt chaotic, not because the responsibilities disappeared- but because things finally felt possible.
Outside, the world was stirring. A generator hummed. A neighbour whistled as they showered and prepared for the day. A phone rang in the distance. Real life continued.
But for the first time in a while, Tobi slept peacefully. He knew he could afford to. Bills and co won’t go away. He now realised that. But he also knew that with the right partner, he could carry on day by day. Life always does. But now, at least, somebody important finally had a seat at the table…doing the one thing that is important – putting You First.
