For over 55 years, FirstBank’s ownership of the Lagos Amateur Open Golf Championship has enhanced the FirstBank brand.

FirstBank Golf Championships

The FirstBank Lagos Amateur Open Golf Championship, which made its debut over 59 years ago, has sailed a smooth ride so far. This year’s tournament is expected to attract the best amateur golfers, not only in Nigeria, but across the continent and indeed the world, this is directly attributed to the Championship being listed on the World Amateur Golf Ranking (WAGR) administered by R&A and USGA. This listing has given the Championship a heightened level of recognition on the world stage as far as amateur golf championships are concerned. The FirstBank Lagos Amateur Open Golf Championship is now one of the international golf events where all amateur golfers worldwide can participate and amass points to aid their WAGR rankings.

In the last nine years, FirstBank has brought in several European PGA professional players from the United Kingdom to coordinate the coaching clinics for special guests, spectators and children.

We also have on our league sired professional golfers like Sunday Okpe, Willy Gift, Oche Odoh, I. Ocheje and recently, Monday Eze. Samuel Amadi and J. Ajiboye hold the record title of highest winners of the Champion Trophy, with five trophies each. While Ajiboye won in 1969, 1972, 1973, 1975 and 1979; Amadi won the trophy in 1997, 1999, 2001, 2007 and 2010. Monday Eze won the coveted trophy in 2014 and 2016, Uche Eze won in 2015 and 2017, while Samuel Njoroge (from Kenya) and Peter Eben-Spiff won in 2018 and 2019 respectively.

Due to the recent update on COVID-19 protocols, and in compliance, the 59th FirstBank Lagos Open Amateur Golf Championship will now be played as a Closed Championship in the hosting Club (open to members of Ikoyi 1938 Golf Club only). We look forward to its resumption as an Open Championship next year. All inconveniences regretted.
