World Environment Day is celebrated annually on June 5 to raise public awareness and encourage action on the protection of the environment. It was established by the United Nations in 1972 and has since become a global platform for promoting environmental action and sustainability.
Every year, the World Environment Day is celebrated with different themes that reflect a pressing environmental issue. Past themes have included advocacy for actions on air pollution, plastic pollution, and climate change. In 2023, the theme focused on solutions to plastic pollution campaigned under the hashtag #BeatPlasticPollution.
All over the world, the environment is inundated by plastics. More than 400 million tonnes of plastic are produced every year, half of which is designed to be used only once and discarded instead of recycling or upcycling. This increases the occurrence of plastic pollution.
World Environment Day is dedicated to reflecting on our individual and collective impacts on the environment and taking actions to reduce our carbon footprint and promote sustainable living. Individuals and organisations all over the world organise events and activities to promote environmental awareness and encourage action. Some of these activities include tree planting, beach clean-ups, educational workshops and seminars.
With increasing technology, more solutions are now available to tackle the problem of plastic waste generation as recycling becomes more popular. Hence, it has become a collective responsibility of individuals and organisations to protect and preserve the planet earth for its continued existence to support this generation and the next.
