Shehu Aliyu was appointed Executive Director, Public Sector in April 2024. Prior to this appointment, he was the Group Executive, Retail Banking North Division, a position he occupied since 2018 after serving as the Regional Head, Retail Banking North and Group Head, North Central 1 in the same business unit. Shehu brings to the Board over 26 years’ expertise across the commercial, retail and public sector businesses.
Before he joined FirstBank, he had worked with various financial institutions including Stanbic IBTC Plc, United Bank for Africa, and Guaranty Trust Bank Plc where he served as the Regional Manager in charge of Personal and Business Banking, Regional Director, Commercial Banking, and Group Head, Public Sector respectively.
Shehu holds a bachelor’s degree in Agricultural Economics and Extension from the University of Maiduguri, a Master of Science in Agricultural Economics from the University of Ibadan and an MBA from Bayero University Business School. He is an honorary senior member of the Chartered Institute of Bankers of Nigeria (HCIB).
He has attended several leadership training programmes globally including the Advanced Management Programme (AMP) at INSEAD Business School, Fontainebleau, France; CEO Development Master Class by The Workforce Group; Leadership Development Programme (Cranfield Business School); Blue Ocean Strategy Workshop (INSEAD Business School), Strategic Leadership Programme (Standard Bank Global Leadership Centre, Johannesburg, South Africa), Management Development Programme (Lagos Business School) and Ethical Leadership for Change (Morehouse College, Atlanta Georgia, USA).
Shehu enjoys reading and swimming. He is married with children.
