FIRSTBANK ANNUAL ESSAY/QUIZ COMPETITIONS

First Bank of Nigeria Plc has over the years distinguished itself as the leading financial services supermarket in Nigeria. This it has done by living up to its brand pillars of Leadership, Enterprise, Safety and Security, and Service Excellence.

As in other areas, the Bank has carved a niche for itself in the area of Corporate Social Responsibility. Promoting academic excellence remains a major plank of the Corporate Social Responsibility focus of FirstBank. This commitment is manifest in our exposure to Nigerian universities through our endowment fund programme. The total value of the Bank’s endowment is N380 million in 15 professorial chairs in Nigerian universities.

The endowment fund programme was further reinforced recently with the provision of 6 Peugeot 406 cars worth N20.4 million, as utility vehicles to the professorial chairs in 6 universities. The Bank equally donated a 30-seater Coaster Bus worth N7.4 million to Nnamdi Azikiwe University, Awka, and a 16-seater Toyota Hiace Bus worth N3.7 million to the University of Jos.

Furthermore, based on a user-defined needs assessment, the Bank supported strategic projects at the cost of N50 million each at the Ahmadu Bello University, Zaria (Information and Communication Technology Park), and University of Ibadan (a Multipurpose Auditorium at the Faculty of Agriculture). In addition to the above strategic projects, the construction of a N50 million Faculty of Dentistry Block is ongoing at the University of Nigeria, Nsukka. Essentially, these programmes were packaged to re-invigorate the endowment scheme in these institutions.

Besides educational development, FirstBank also promotes individual and national development through support for sports and youth development, healthcare, employment and wealth creation, arts and culture, community development, as well as donations and sponsorships in support of various causes.

Over the years, the Bank has organized the annual essay and quiz competitions to stimulate intellectual discourse among students and prepare them for the challenges of leadership in the future. We are proud to announce that this objective is being realized.  It is worthy of note that Mr. John Aboh, our Bank’s Executive Director, Banking Operations & Services, was the winner of the first edition of the Essay Competition some years back. This year, we are happy to announce the introduction of an Internship Programme in the Bank for winners of the Quiz Competition, in addition to the regular prizes.

While the quiz competition is of a general nature, the essay competition is designed to seek possible solutions to pertinent national issues.  Therefore, the topic for this year’s essay is “Harnessing the Potential of Nigerian Banks for Meeting the Millennium Development Goals.”

The essay competition is open to all undergraduates of Nigerian universities and polytechnics from May 15 and closes on June 25, 2007; whereas entries for the quiz competition are open to secondary schools nationwide from May 21 and closes on June 18, 2007.
