First Bank of Nigeria Plc is proud to announce the launch of
local debit card PoS terminal in collaboration with Chams
Nig Ltd and InterSwitch Nigeria Ltd. Under this arrangement,
FirstCash Cards (also known as ATM
cards) will be accepted at merchant outlets equipped with
Ingenico Point of Sale (PoS) terminals for the purchase of
goods and services.
How it Works
The terminal will be connected to InterSwitch via
communications links such as telephone line. At the point of
purchase, a debit card is swiped through the terminal which
automatically connects to InterSwitch for verification and
authorization at the cardholder's bank.
If the cardholder's account is sufficiently funded to absorb
the value of the transaction, his/her account is debited
immediately. The merchant receives value within 24 hours.
Benefits to
the Merchant
- The PoS terminals are multifunctional. In other words,
various cards such as ValuCard, and debit card (MasterCard
and Visa will be accepted in next phase) can be processed
on a single terminal. A merchant does not have to install
more than one terminal to handle all these transactions
- It eliminates the need for cash with its associated
costs and risks
- The terminal will accept cards from InterSwitch member
banks which have the InterSwitch logo at the back. These
include FirstBank, UBA, Guaranty Trust Bank, Standard
Trust Bank, Zenith International Bank, Oceanic and Wema.
Others include Afribank, UTB, Prudent, Platinum, Chartered
Bank, Bond Bank, National Bank and Gulf Bank
- The merchant makes more sales as the cardholder's
spending is not constrained by the amount of cash he is
carrying at the moment.
Benefits to
Cardholders
- The card is very convenient as it eliminates the need
to carry cash
- The cardholder does not need to visit the bank to load
the card as the card gives access to his/her bank account
- Since it is PIN protected, it is safe as long as the
cardholder does not compromise his/her PIN
- Cardholders can access cash not only from the ATMs but
also from the PoS terminals at merchant outlets
- Cardholder can perform balance enquiry at PoS terminal
PoS debit card transaction is the next logical step to
electronic payment systems in Nigeria and aligns the country
with the trend in the developed world. First Bank is
delighted to be at the forefront of this development and to
bring this convenience to the doorstep of every Nigerian
